Slovo juga Association is a civil society organisation based in Niš, Serbia, dedicated to preserving, documenting and promoting the cultural, historical and social heritage of southern Serbia.
Through media, publishing, research, educational activities and cooperation with local communities, the Association works to make local heritage more visible, accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences. Particular attention is given to stories, places, traditions and people that are insufficiently represented in mainstream media and public cultural programmes.
Our work
Slovo juga develops and supports projects in the fields of:
- cultural and historical heritage;
- documentation of local history and oral traditions;
- publishing and media production;
- digital presentation and promotion of heritage;
- educational and community-based activities;
- cooperation with cultural institutions, schools, associations and local stakeholders.
The Association is closely connected with the Slovo juga magazine and online media platform, which provide an important channel for presenting local history, cultural heritage, community initiatives and stories from towns and villages across southern Serbia.
Heritage and local communities
We believe that cultural heritage has the greatest value when it remains connected to the community that created it.
For this reason, our projects seek to bring together local residents, researchers, cultural workers, young people, schools, institutions and volunteers. We are particularly interested in endangered or neglected heritage sites that can be given a new role.
Our vision
Our long-term goal is to contribute to a network of small local heritage initiatives across southern Serbia — places where local history is preserved in the communities themselves, rather than disappearing from public memory.
By combining heritage preservation, community participation and contemporary media, Slovo juga Association aims to help neglected local heritage become visible, understood and used again.
